Number of Filipinos in Japan Climbs as Foreign Population Hits New High

TOKYO – The number of Filipino nationals residing in Japan reached 341,518 as of the end of 2024, an increase of 19,472 from the previous year, according to the latest data from the Immigration Services Agency (ISA).

Filipinos remain the fourth-largest group of foreign residents in the Land of the Rising Sun.

The country’s total foreign resident population hit a record high of 3,768,977 for the third consecutive year. Among them, 873,286 were Chinese, 634,361 were Vietnamese, and 409,238 were South Korean.

By residency status, permanent residents formed the largest category, totaling 918,116.

Tokyo had the highest number of foreign residents at 738,946, followed by Osaka, Aichi, Kanagawa, and Saitama.

Meanwhile, as of Jan. 1, the number of illegal overstayers in Japan stood at 74,863, including 4,684 Filipinos, a decrease of 385 from the previous year. - Florenda Corpuz
