TOKYO – Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Thursday confirmed Japan’s commitment to stage the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games next year.
In a video message issued for the UK-led Global Vaccine Summit 2020, Abe reiterated his determination to host the Games “in their complete form in the summer of 2021 as a testament to humanity’s victory over COVID-19.”
The Games have been moved to July 23 to Aug. 8, 2021 for the Olympics, and Aug. 24 to Sept. 5, 2021 for the Paralympics due to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, the sporting event will retain the Tokyo 2020 name. - Florenda Corpuz
