TOKYO – Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise is set to return to Japan for the 26th time to promote his upcoming dark comedy film “Digger.”
Cruise will be in Japan from Oct. 5 to 7 for promotional events, including a red carpet event and premiere screening of the film. He will be joined by director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, a five-time Oscar winner.
“Digger,” which opens in Japanese cinemas Oct. 9, follows Digger Rockwell, an arrogant and greedy billionaire whose oil drilling operation puts the world at risk of catastrophe.
Cruise plays Rockwell, an oil industry mogul who looks markedly different from the actor’s familiar roles. For the part, he appears with white hair, wrinkles and a protruding belly.
The 64-year-old actor’s visit will coincide with the 20th anniversary of “Tom Cruise Day,” designated by the Japan Memorial Day Association in recognition of his popularity among Japanese fans and his frequent visits to the country for film promotions.
It will be Cruise’s first visit to Japan since the anniversary was established.
Japan will be the final stop of the film’s worldwide promotional tour, following stops in London, Mexico City, Los Angeles and Seoul. Promotional events will be held in five Japanese cities, culminating in Tokyo.
