Ylona Garcia: From ‘Pinoy Big Brother’ House to Anime Awards

TOKYO – Filipino-Australian singer, songwriter, actress, and “Pinoy Big Brother (PBB)” alumna Ylona Garcia expressed gratitude for her career journey, from humble beginnings to the soaring heights of her current success in the entertainment world, crediting her fans for their support.

“Back home in the Philippines is where it all started. So, if it weren’t for my fans’ support, I wouldn’t be here,” she told the Filipino-Japanese Journal in an interview on the orange carpet of the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024 at the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa in Tokyo on March 2.

Despite missing the Philippines, its food, and her family, the 22-year-old artist conveyed enthusiasm about being in Japan and attending the Anime Awards for the first time. She served as one of the presenters at this year’s edition.

“I’m feeling excited, but also really nervous. This is not only my first time in Japan but also my first time at the Anime Awards. I’m kinda reeling myself to the fact that, oh my god, we’re all here today to celebrate something that we all really, really love. That’s crazy! And the fact that I get to be here is also crazy, so I’m feeling a mix of emotions,” she said giddily. - Words and interview by Florenda Corpuz, Photos by Din Eugenio
