Filipino Residents in Japan Climb as Foreign Population Surpasses 4 Million

TOKYO – The number of Filipino nationals residing in Japan increased to 356,579 at the end of 2025, up 15,061 from the previous year, according to data released by the Immigration Services Agency. 

Filipinos remained the fourth-largest foreign resident group in Japan, as the country’s overall foreign population climbed to a record 4,125,395, crossing the 4-million mark for the first time. 

Chinese nationals continued to make up the largest group at 930,428, followed by Vietnamese at 681,100 and South Koreans at 407,341. 

Permanent residents accounted for the largest share of foreign residents by status, totaling 947,125. 

Tokyo recorded the highest concentration of foreign residents with 801,438, followed by Osaka, Aichi, Kanagawa and Saitama prefectures. 

In a separate report, the number of foreign nationals who overstayed their visas fell to 68,488 as of Jan. 1 this year, down 6,375 from a year earlier. Filipinos accounted for 4,393 of the total, a decrease of 291. Florenda Corpuz
