TOKYO – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos were received by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako at the Imperial Palace on Wednesday during a state call.

Marcos Jr. received the Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum, one of Japan’s highest imperial decorations, while the First Lady was awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Precious Crown. The honors are traditionally conferred on foreign heads of state and senior dignitaries. The visit comes as the Philippines and Japan mark 70 years since the normalization of diplomatic relations.

Crown Prince Fumihito, Crown Princess Kiko, and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi were present at the welcome ceremony, which included national anthems, a guard of honor, and a troop inspection.

In a reciprocal exchange, the Philippines conferred the Order of Lakandula with the rank of Supremo on Emperor Naruhito, while Empress Masako received the Order of Gabriela Silang.

After the state call, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako briefly greeted members of the Philippine media inside the Imperial Palace. The Emperor acknowledged the press pool, while the Empress asked about their stay in Japan.
