Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz Wins Philippines’ First-Ever Olympic Gold

TOKYO – Hidilyn Diaz became the first Olympic gold medalist from the Philippines after winning the women’s 55-kilogram weightlifting competition at the Tokyo 2020 Games held at the capital’s International Forum Monday night.

Diaz, the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist, overtook China’s Liao Qiuyun on her last lift in the clean and jerk to win with a total 224 kilograms, an Olympic record.

Her feat ended the 97-year Olympic gold medal drought for the Southeast Asian country. - FJJ
