EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Four Young Filipina Artists Exhibit at Art Fair Tokyo

By Florenda Corpuz

TOKYO – In celebration of National Women’s Month, Galerie Stephanie showcased the works of four talented young female artists from the Philippines at Art Fair Tokyo (AFT) 2025 held at the Tokyo International Forum from March 7 to 9.

This marks the gallery’s seventh participation in the prestigious art fair, where it featured works by Kim Borja, Jem Magbanua, Naburok, and Thea Quiachon.

“All the artists we brought are women, and they’re all young. We wanted to spotlight some of the newest talents in our gallery,” Abby Teotico, Managing Director of Galerie Stephanie, told Filipino-Japanese Journal (FJJ) during a press preview on March 6.

Teotico expressed admiration for the Japanese art market, noting, “We like that the Japanese audience is open to appreciating art they’ve never seen before. If they like it, they will purchase it, even if they aren’t familiar with the artist. They’re very adventurous in their art buying. The quality of work at this fair is really good, so it’s nice to be among such esteemed galleries and artists.”

When asked about the gallery’s objectives at AFT, Teotico emphasized the importance of exposure for the featured artists. “For us, it’s about giving our artists international exposure. It’s fulfilling to bring them here and share their work with a global audience,” she explained.

The 19th edition of AFT, the largest international art fair in Japan and the oldest in Asia, brought together 139 galleries from the Land of the Rising Sun and around the world. Galerie Stephanie, based in Manila, was the only gallery from the Philippines at the event, which attracted approximately 55,000 visitors.
