TOKYO – The Japanese government on Friday has signed an agreement with U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. and its German partner BioNTech SE to purchase an additional 50 million doses of their novel coronavirus vaccine, bringing the total number of shots to 194 million.

MANILA – The Philippines on Monday night received 193,050 donated doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine from the World Health Organization’s COVAX Facility.

TOKYO – Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga on Friday extended the current state of emergency over the COVID-19 pandemic for Tokyo and the western prefectures of Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo until May 31 as new variants of the virus are becoming prevalent in the country.
